Clergy & Lay Leadership
The appointed pastor at Signal Hill UMC is Rev. Jim Wheeler. He is assisted by church secretary Kim Hutchison and a committed team of servant leaders, including the chairpersons of the four key areas: Marcia Beckwith, Ministry Team; the Board of Trustees; the Finance team; and Bill Wimmer, Staff/Pastor Parish Relations.
Our History & Heritage
In 1910, Carr Smith invited children to a new Sunday School by writing in chalk on the sidewalks near Signal Hill School. Interest grew, more classes formed, and in 1911, McKendree College sent a student pastor, Robert M. Peters to lead regular worship services. In 1916, the community church voted to become a Methodist Church. Signal Hill UMC has been a vital part of its community in west Belleville for nearly 100 years.
A Heritage Sunday was held on May 4, 2008.
Some of the history of the church has been compiled in several documents: church beginning and first sanctuary, first sanctuary and educational wing, early parsonage and 1960's building, and a reproduction of a 1965 booklet. The history of the United Methodist Church is available on the web.
