Heritage Sun 2008

Heritage Sunday, May 4, 2008

Members of Signal Hill UMC invited guests to join them for a Heritage Sunday celebration from 3 - 5 pm on May 4, 2008, at the church.

Sidewalk chalk artist David Carr produced an original piece of art in front of the main doors of the sanctuary. The picture depicts an angel presenting a Bible to the community, commemorating the first Sunday School classes that met under the big trees at Signal Hill School in 1910.

Hampels Magic Center presented a fun program for kids of all ages in Fellowship Hall.

The church hosted special displays by McKendree University, Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House, B.E.A.C.O.N, and Blessed Believers Ministries. McKendree has a long history wih Signal Hill UMC, providing student pastors to the church for many years, including the first pastor, Robert M. Peters, in 1910.

Pastor Peter Wehrly congratulated retired pastor Paul Beach for his prayers that resulted in a beautiful spring day. Kanda Vallina and Jean Jones shared a smile before Kanda helped host the Celebration Program, which included music by Signal Hill School 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students and the church house band, and remarks by Rev. David Eadie, Lay Leader Sandy Smith, and Pastor Wehrly.

Many persons were responsible for the successful day, including Fairy Meek, who headed up the United Methodist Women's group that provided refreshments for the day. Newly-trained greeters were stationed at all the doors during the Open House. Former Signal Hill UMC pastors Jim Rhea, Scott Grulke and Terry Clark also stopped by.
